The "E.A."

Fairly often, someone on the Everready would cast straight up in the air, because they took their thumb off the spool too soon. Captain Packy would always yell to the mates "That's an E. A."

I'd ask him every time..."what's an E.A. Packy?"

But he never would tell me.

Finally one day, someone cast straight up...the jig whizzed right by Packy's head...Packy made his usual comment, and I called to him  "What on earth is an E.A., Packy? I've got to know!"

He said:

"It's an elephant's ass."

"It's high, and it stinks!"
